Stephan Shore

Born in 1947 in New York

Started darkroom work at the age of 6
At 15, his work was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York
At 18, participated in Andy Warhol's Factory
At 24, as a living photographer, he established numerous records after his solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
He has had a strong influence on colleagues and junior photographers as a pride of American contemporary photography.
In Korea, his book "The Nature of Photographs" has been translated and published, used as a textbook.


Currently a professor at Bard College

Since 1989, he has been a leading expert in art museums in Korea, overseeing the construction, exhibition, collection, and education responsibilities at institutions such as Seoul Museum of Art, Jeonbuk Provincial Museum, and Samsung Cultural Foundation. He has studied management, archaeology, and fine arts, gaining an understanding of museum management and art.

He has a keen interest in photography, which has become an important medium in contemporary art.

In 1989, started as a documentary photographer capturing social landscapes on the streets. Over the past 10 years, he has been working on portrait projects depicting specific groups of people in Korean society, such as ajummas, high school girls, or girls putting on makeup.

Published four individual photo books: "Cosmetic Girl" (2009), "Girl's Act" (2005), "Ajumma" (1999), and participated in the 51st Venice Biennale Korean Pavilion exhibition in 2005.

She is interested in the interaction between artists and viewers that occurs during the creation and appreciation of photographic images. Under the motto that everything that catches the eye is the source of joy, she is active as a theorist, infusing artistic value into various photographs.

Captivated by the pure visual delight that can be experienced through light, she has been taking photographs since her childhood. By integrating psychology and photographic art, she became the first in Korea to earn a Ph.D. in the field of photographic theory.

Currently, she passionately interprets photography through psychological ideas, working as a professor, researcher, critic, exhibition planner, visual director, and more.
