Magical Reality
This series, which can be considered as my representative work, captures Korean landscapes with a large format camera.
It was a time when Korean photography was undergoing a generational change by artists with an international sensibility. As an aspiring artist who decided to pursue photography as an art form, it was a new artist's idea to question the identity of so-called modern photography. My thought was this. I wanted the subject or problem of photography to resonate with people all over the world... This was about documenting the 'Korean attitude'. It was an attempt to visualize the intangible behavioral patterns of humans, just as there are 'cultures' in each country.
From my early work, "Living in Seoul", I have visually experienced the reality and transformation of urban landscapes. This work gained momentum when the Statue of Liberty began to appear on the rooftops of the city. Children play with Western blonde dolls 'Barbie', amusement parks are filled with pictures of tourist spots around the world, and Korean temples and churches have seeped into the city's underground, not Shaolin Temple. No one was deceived by the illusion of scenery. Only a curious vision exists, and it is reasonable to see it as just a frown. These dazzling, colorful landscapes seemed to be in a magic show. It was an attitude of watching the magician's right hand with bulging eyes. By the time this work was somewhat organized, the tourist bus of Trot became a school bus where students read books and went to school on Monday morning, and the Christmas tree that was excited at the end of the year was standing promising next year with a motel as the background. The nameless decorations and splendor of the wedding hall are hidden by hanbok and rubber shoes, and the karaoke room is armed with all kinds of concepts, even to the point of a pushy atmosphere. Is it just uncomfortable to see all these landscapes as 'Korean attitude'? Rather, it seems to be an affectionate attitude rather than familiarity and vulgarity. Is it because of the increased power of positivity? It's just that the Korean landscape is so adorable, I thought it would be nice to start by recognizing myself and showing it calmly and honestly. If you step back, it can't be so beautiful. Just like 'magic' is fun.
